Captain Charlie Plumb graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis and went on to fly the F-4 Phantom jet on 74 successful combat missions over Vietnam. On his 75th mission, with only five days before he was to return home, Plumb was shot down, captured, tortured and imprisoned in an 8 foot x 8 foot cell. He spent the next 2,103 days as a Prisoner Of War in communist war prisons.

During his nearly six years of captivity, Plumb distinguished himself among his fellow prisoners as a professional in underground communications, and served for two of those years as the Chaplain in his camp.

Since his return home, more than 4,500 audiences in nearly every industry have been spellbound as Plumb draws parallels between his P.O.W. experience and the challenges of everyday life. He has shared his message to an even wider public through appearances on Good Morning America, Nightline, Larry King Live and The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.

One of the most sought-after achievement speakers of his time, Plumb’s presentations are as he is, sincere, straightforward, humorous and tailored to motivate each specific audience he encounters. His insights on how to cope with the difficulties as well as the opportunities in life have a positive impact on those who hear his message, those who read his books, and those who come to know him as a friend.

Plumb’s military honors include two Purple Hearts, the Legion of Merit, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the P.O.W. Medal.

Change

Invariably, just about the time things feel comfortable, change hits. And whether that change is positive or negative it can be disturbing and difficult to adjust to. Yet, it’s during those times that ones true value shows up, in taking the risks necessary to adapt to change.

In regards to Charlie, we were so very pleased with his presentation and how he engaged with the audience. Our firm puts on an annual conference that is a tremendous amount of information in a short period of time (almost three days). Each year, we attempt to find a speaker that impacts the audience in a much more profound way than any of the others. Most of the content over those few days will be industry driven, but Charlie's presentation was so much more than that. It is what we refer to as "magic in a box." Although he did a wonderful job in relating his presentation to our business and industry, what he accomplished that night was something that no one in that audience will ever forget. His story, the way he presented, and his humbleness left everyone memorized and motivated not only to be better in their practice, but better people in all aspects of their lives. In my opinion, for a presentation to have that type of profound impact on 400-500 people, it has to have three major components (1) an unbelievable story (2) a common thread to anyone who would be in the audience and (3) an articulate and heart-felt presenter. We found all of that and much more in Charlie Plumb and it was evident from the line of people that formulated at the foot of the stage as soon as his presentation was done. Audience members waited over an hour to shake his hand and thank him for his service and influence. Even as I sit here and type about Charlie's time with us, all of those unbelievable emotions come rushing back. That is why I would refer to his influence as "magic in a box"...it is something that is never forgotten and something you can go back to anytime you choose to feel the same motivation and emotion that you did that night. -Justin Cole, J.W Cole
