Mike has been providing motivational and inspirational presentations to groups and organizations for over 20 years. His background includes working for a Fortune 500 company, serving as an elected official, owning and operating various successful private businesses, serving on a variety of volunteer boards, and wearing the uniform of the United States Army through his service in the South Dakota Army National Guard. Mike is a combat Veteran serving in both Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq, and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Mike recently retired after 36 years of service at the rank of Brigadier General.

Through service in these positions, continued professional education in performance excellence, 36 years of marriage to his wife Jo and raising four kids, Mike has acquired a tremendous background in leadership, teamwork and motivating people. He understands what it takes to build and maintain a positive attitude and how to motivate those around you to be better than they believe is possible.

Mike’s philosophy of “when we become better at who we are, we become better in all we do”, drives his passion to spread a message of self-improvement and helping people realize their maximum potential. He uses humor and real-life experiences to ensure participants connect to the message and learn to recognize the “negativity traps” that affect our attitudes. His overall mission is to assist individuals and organizations to perform at such a level that Excellence becomes their Average.

Making Excellence Your Average

This presentation is designed to help you cultivate a mindset where excellence is the baseline, and achieving your goals is second nature. We understand that our attitude is one of the most powerful tools we have, and it’s entirely within our control. The key to living where excellence is our average is embedded in consistently choosing a positive attitude—especially when life presents us with challenges.

Acknowledging that our attitude is a personal choice and that we should choose positivity all day, every day, the question becomes how to effectively prepare ourselves to consistently make that positive choice when life throws us those challenges. This presentation focuses on actionable steps and strategies that make choosing a positive attitude not just possible, but natural.

By actively adopting the tools provided in this presentation, you’ll be empowered to shift your mindset from reactive to proactive, embracing positivity and focusing on solutions, start seeing issues as opportunities and embrace what life brings us. This transformation helps you bring your best self to every situation, creating a ripple effect of positivity within your team and beyond.

Key Takeaways:

  • Identify Components of a Positive Mental Attitude: Learn the essential elements that form a consistent, positive mindset.
  • Develop Effective Methods for Applying Positivity: Discover practical strategies to ensure a positive attitude becomes second nature in all situations.
  • Create Processes to Foster a Positive Mental Attitude: Develop actionable routines that support and sustain your positive mindset over time.
  • Recognize External Forces that Undermine Positivity: Understand the challenges and influences that can derail positivity and learn how to counteract them.
  • Become an “Opportunity Ambassador”: Shift your perspective to view every situation and issue as an opportunity for growth and guide others to do the same.
  • Create a Positive Professional Environment: Learn how to foster an atmosphere where everyone is encouraged to maintain a positive attitude, creating a culture of growth and support.

The Journey Ahead:

This is the beginning of an exciting and challenging continuous journey toward personal and professional growth. By understanding that we alone control how we respond to life’s events, we unlock our full potential for success. The skills and strategies shared here will be your foundation for an ongoing commitment to excellence, personally, professionally and within your team.

With this powerful start, you will be equipped to take control of your attitude, making it a driving force for positive change in every area of your life.

Embracing Change

In today’s dynamic world, change is the only constant. The most successful organizations and individuals are those who not only accept change but actively embrace it. Embracing change means shifting from a mindset of resistance to one of proactive adaptation. Change is an opportunity for growth, creativity, and innovation—and it doesn’t need to be feared or avoided. Rather, it should be seen as a powerful tool for continuous improvement. By welcoming change, we unlock fresh possibilities, improve processes, and foster an environment where risk is viewed as a positive force rather than a threat.

This presentation aims to transform your organization from merely tolerating change to actively seeking it as a driver of progress. Change might come with challenges, but it is through overcoming these challenges that we unlock new opportunities, validate what works, and continuously enhance our practices. Change is not an obstacle; it is an exciting pathway to growth, both for individuals and the organization as a whole.

Key Takeaways:

1.    Shift Your Mindset to See Change as Opportunity: Instead of viewing change as a disruption, train yourself and your team to see it as an opportunity for growth. By changing your perception of change, you can transform your organization’s approach to innovation and adaptation.

2.    Embrace Risk as a Catalyst for Innovation: Change often involves risk, but risk can be a powerful motivator. Understand that risk isn’t something to avoid, but something that can fuel creativity and push the boundaries of what’s possible. Encourage your team to take calculated risks in the pursuit of new ideas and improvements.

3.    Cultivate a Culture of Continuous Learning: Change often brings the need for new skills and knowledge. Foster an environment where continuous learning is valued, and employees are empowered to acquire the skills necessary to adapt to evolving circumstances.

4.    Encourage Open Communication Around Change: Change can be intimidating, so it’s crucial to ensure that communication remains open and transparent. When everyone understands the reasons behind changes, how they will impact the organization, and how they can contribute, it creates a sense of shared purpose and reduces resistance.

5.    Celebrate Small Wins During Change: Change can be a long journey, but recognizing and celebrating small milestones can help maintain momentum. Encourage your team to acknowledge successes along the way, whether they are related to process improvements, new solutions, or individual achievements.

6.    Build Resilience and Flexibility: Embracing change requires resilience—the ability to bounce back after setbacks. Cultivate a flexible mindset that can adapt to unforeseen challenges and opportunities. When your team can pivot quickly and effectively, they will be better positioned to thrive in changing environments.

7.    Proactively Seek Change, Don’t Wait for It: Encourage your team to be forward-thinking and actively look for areas where change can create improvements. Don’t wait for change to be forced upon you—identify opportunities to innovate, refine practices, and improve processes continuously.

By implementing these strategies, you can help your team move from simply surviving change to actively seeking and creating it. This proactive approach will lead to sustained growth, increased innovation, and a stronger, more adaptable organization.
