John M. Baumann found success as a student, attorney, educator, author and inspirational speaker. Now he faces his biggest challenge: success with Parkinson’s. John graduated from Cornell Law School and successfully practiced law for 16 years when, in 2002, at 41 years old, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He practiced law for 10 more years when he decided, in 2008, to do something more purposeful with his life: teach at the University of Louisville, write a book, and help others with PD by becoming an inspirational speaker focusing upon diet, exercise, being positive, inner strength, staying mentally active, uncovering your purpose and having faith.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of participating in the annual Hope Parkinson Symposium held in downtown Ft, Myers. I never cease to be surprised when attending a Parkinson's symposium, that over 300 people are willing to get up early on a weekday or weekend morning to learn about how to better manage a chronic neurological disease. I have never witnessed any other group of people with a chronic disease this invested in learning about self-management. Dr. Amanda Avila, Medical Director for Hope Parkinson's, and a movement disorders specialist in Ft. Myers, and Dr. Kelly Foote, a DBS neurosurgeon from the University of Florida Movement Disorders Center provided a medical perspective on managing motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Dr. Foote's presentation on DBS (deep brain stimulation), a somewhat complex subject was informative and humorous, and those persons in the audience with troubling symptoms of dyskinesia or tremor might have thought afterward: "where do I sign up?” By the last speaker of any conference, people are often a bit tired and restless, and since yesterday's conference had already run over the scheduled time, you might have thought that some people would have been ready to leave. But, this was far from the case. From his first to last words, John Baumann, a motivational speaker, cloaked the audience in warmth, passion, and hope that a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease could lead one to find a greater purpose in life. If this is so, John has truly unlocked the secret. A former corporate attorney, diagnosed with Parkinson's in his late 30's, John turned to teaching, writing, and speaking as his new career path. His basic message: "whatever hand life deals you, whatever life changing adversity you have to endure, you still have some control over it." "You don't have to just to live well,"he advises," but live an Amazing Life." The formula he proposes: Faith in yourself, discipline, determination, desire, intensity, and inner strength. By the end of John's talk, I was fighting back tears. Not, because I have Parkinson's disease, but because he was speaking to the heart of all of us in the audience. He was tapping into the struggle we all have from time to time in our human condition, of finding meaning and purpose in our lives, and using this as a way of working through hard times. Over the last six months or more, the media has subjected us to the angry messages of political candidates, who profess to be speaking for and to the American public. But, yesterday, the message I heard John Baumann share is what resonated with a room full of strangers. A fundamental belief that within us all is the ability to find meaning and purpose in any situation, and create the best life for ourselves. If you ever see that John Baumann is on the schedule of an upcoming Parkinson's conference in your community, I recommend you attend.
